All About Alyson MichalkaAlyson Michalka was born in Torrance, California, on 25 March 1989 and moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1992.She draws and (of course) has plans to start her own fashion label. Sigh! With her younger sister Amanda (Amanda Jane, or AJ) she chairs the Children's Advisory Board for the AmberWatch Foundation. Yeah right! Can you imagine what advice these scripted, cosseted, shrink-wrapped Disney simulations could offer children who actually live in the real world and experience its dangers? I guess something like, "Don't go out without your bodyguard!" would strike a chord with most kids. Alyson first trod the boards in church productions (why am I not surprised?) at five, started piano lessons at six, began modeling at eleven, took up the guitar at thirteen ... and Amanda Jane matched her every step of the way. At 15 Alyson held teen attention in a stranglehold when she played Phil's friend Keely Teslow in the Disney Channel's Phil of the Future. How ironic. Keely Teslow is one of the cool girls at school. Alyson Michalka, on the other hand, has never been near a school in her life ... But irony's like evolution - unimportant in the curriculum of home schooling fundamentalists. Alyson and Amanda starred together in Disney's Cow Belles, playing spoilt sisters Taylor and Courtney Callum. In another delicious irony the fictional sisters, unlike the Michalkas, are forced to experience something marginally resembling the real world. In January 2005 Now You See It, another Disney movie, cast Alyson (yes, fourteen year old Alyson!) as a television producer. Uhuh. In the firm hands and base plans of people who like playing God - their mother Carrie, their manager Gerry Cagle, Hollywood Records president Bob Cavallo and General Manager Abbey Konowitch and the rest of the Disney empire - Alyson and Amanda have evolved into the pop act Aly & AJ. Their songs play on Radio Disney and lurk in the soundtrack of Disney movies (Herbie: Fully Loaded and Ice Princess), making the "impossibly blonde" Michalka sisters a natural selection for the hearts, minds and spending power of pre-teen and young teen girls. Hollywood/Universal Records released Aly & AJ's first album, Into the Rush, in August 2005. The sisters wrote, or helped their mother to help songwriters to write, most of the songs on the album. One of two cover songs they included was Do You Believe in Magic?. The other was Walking on Sunshine, the classic hit that exploded with joyous energy when Katrina and the Waves recorded it. The Michalka version could be called Oozing on Porridge - its visual equivalent would be cold treacle. Aly & AJ's Acoustic Hearts of Winter, their second album, hit the stores in time to cash in on the spending hysteria of Christmas 2006. It was inevitable that Aly and AJ would be asked to record a song in Simlish. It's a pretend language, a mutated version of Ukrainian and Tagalog out-takes mangled in the labs at Electronic Arts. Simlish allows simulated humans to communicate and the Michalkas, of course, were already fluent speakers. A Simlish version of their song Chemicals React, and a simulated music video that includes the Michalkas' own dogs (simulated, of course), became part of The Sims 2 Pets expansion pack. Right on cue, MTV has also embraced the Sims, I mean the Michalkas, with an appearance on Total Request Live and a movie in production. The rise of Alyson Michalka and her clone, er sister, is all part of a wholesome, caring plan spelled out lovingly by Hollywood Records General Manager Abbey Konowitch - "work the Disney demographic first then move into top 40." Doesn't it bring a lump to your throat? And by the way, don't call them Disney girls. They don't like that.
